This is a track from the new Chronicles of Narnia soundtrack. I’ve been a long time fan of Switchfoot but lost more interest in the band with each successive release up until this song and Jon Foreman’s solo work started coming out and really breathed new life into a musical approach that had become stale.

I’ve got my memories
Always inside of me
But I cant go back, back to how it was

I believe now
Ive come too far
No I cant go back, back to how it was

Create it for a place ive never known
This is home
Now im finally where I belong, where I belong
Yah this is home, ive been searching for a place of my own,
Now I found it, maybe this is home
Yes this is home

Belief over misery
I seen the enemy
And I wont go back, back to how it was
And I got my heart set on what happens next
I got my eyes wide its not over yet
We miracles, and were not alone

Yah this is home, now im finally where I belong
Yea this is home, ive been searching for a place of my own,
Now I found it, maybe this is home
Yes this is home

And now, after all my searching
After all my questions
Im going to call it home
I got a brand new mind set
I can finally see the sunset
Im gonna call it home

Home, this is home
Now Im finally where I belong, belong
Yes this is home,
Ive been searching for a place of my own
Now I found it,
Maybe this is home
This is home

Now I know
Yea this is home

Ive come too far
And I wont go back
Yea this is home

With the green you’re leaving

I don’t mind silence
I don’t mind sitting
I can be quiet
I wish you could hear me

Go back, you repeat
Trace the veins that you don’t want to see
With your hands in your hair
Don’t leave your fingers buried

Do you think that we could try forgetting?
The places we’ve gone with the ceiling spinning
Slow down until we stop
We have to steal this night back

I don’t mind silence
I don’t mind sitting
I can be quiet
I wish you could hear me

I’m tired of going to these basement parties
Where everybody wants to leave their body
I’m hiding in the bathroom with no witness
I’m speaking through the door about some sickness

I don’t mind silence

As we continue to anticipate Narrow Stairs I’d like to treat you to another previously unreleased track from Death Cab’s album.

This one is courtesy of BBC6 with special thanks to Caleb over at IHTFAF. “Cath…” is a solid acoustic offering from Ben Gibbard and I’m excited to hear how it sounds with the full band. Now if only DCfC would do a proper recording of “Broken Yoke In Western Sky…”

[See post to listen to track]
Cath (acoustic).mp3 (right click to save as)

Cath…
She stands with a well intentioned man.
But she can’t relax with his hands on the small of her back.
As the flashbulbs burst she holds a smile.
Like someone would hold a crying child.

Soon everybody will ask what became of you.
Your heart was dying fast and you didn’t know what to do.

Cath…
It seems that you live in someone else’s dream.
In a hand-me-down wedding dress
With the things that could have been are repressed.
But you said your vows and you closed the door
On so many men who would have loved you more.

Soon everybody will ask what became of you.
Your heart was dying fast and you didn’t know what to do.
The whispers that it won’t last roll up and down the pews.
And if our hearts were dying that fast, they would have done the same as you.
I’d have done the same as you.

Go for a lunch hour stroll
Why should you wind your way through Coca-Cola cabs
When you can jump your own shadow on Burnside Avenue?
I know you wish you’d stayed home
Now for the fourteenth time you are that kid
In backseats that blur under an angry moon

But the center cannont hold, that you cling to
You don’t need to look for trouble
Trouble will find its way to you

But when there’s nine thousand neckties in a swarm all around you
Lunch-counter girls are always so put on
Don’t deconstruct the megadome it’s inside you
The Polaroids can’t stand up when they’re own
Ask me again if I can do you a favor
As the snow and the window get some business done
Your neighbor, who wishes you would stop getting locked out
It’s all grist for your decay mill

So let the backlash begin
You would always say gray lightning was your only friend
The bleachers are empty the sky is an impossible blue
But I don’t need to argue anymore
So I let you hack away
Until you decide you prefer the floor as floor

But the center cannot hold
The center cannot hold
You don’t need to look for trouble
Trouble will find its way to you

Like many of you, I can’t wait to hear Death Cab for Cutie’s new album, Narrow Stairs. Atlantic has done a commendable job of keeping the album, due out in May, from leaking. This track, titled Pity and Fear, was played on NPR earlier this month and this rather low quality webrip has been circulating…

I have such a envy for this stranger lying next to me
Who awakes in the night and slips out into the pre-dawn light
With no words, a clean escape, no promises or messes made
And chops it all up to mistake, mistake, mistake

And there are no tears
Just pity and fear
No vast ravine
Right in between

A storm at sea the bow cracked and I was capsizing
And I sunk below where I swore I would never go
If you can’t stand in place you can’t tell there’s walking away
From who remains, who stays, who stays, who stays

And there are no tears
Just pity and fear
No vast ravine
Right in between

Spare no tears
Just pity and fear
And I recall
The push more than the fall
The push more than the fall

We just got another new song that will be on Narrow Stairs! Listen to Ben Gibbard play “Cath.”

I plan my dinner at the hotel
but then my dinner plans got wrecked
an investment banker started something
so I broke his neck

we’re all stuck out in the desert
and we’re gonna die
wipe that sand and salt
from your blistering eyes

well the polygraph needles were jumpin
and my conscience edward fell asleep
I can’t trust myself to tell the secrets
I was told to keep

the fastest jackalope in Texas
he started runnin outta luck
bit by a snake
then he got hit by Jimmy’s semi-truck

we’re all stuck out in the desert
and we’re gonna die
wipe that sand and salt

well I know sometimes I get distracted
America’s so big and wide
with her long white fingers she says
“hush, I’m not the marrying kind”

my mind moves faster when I’m walkin
my baby shoes are dipped in bronze
I don’t give a sh**, she calls the shots
that’s how we get along

On the way, on the way home
I saw a rainbow beneath my feet,
flowing over the filthy street.
It’s a long, it’s a long way
back to the place where we used to sit
when you and I were just little kids.
The time we had is not gone.
The way we chose was the long one.
The time we had is not gone.
The stone that fell is still falling.
So let that stone be the wondrous thing
that comes to pass when our voices sing.
On the way, on the way home
I heard some ghosts laughing in the trees,
moving inside the midnight breeze.
The time we had is not gone.
The way we chose was the long one.
The time we had is not gone.
Way out here the voice and the mind are clear.

I just can’t seem to get it right today
I guess I’m gonna give up
Oh, I guess I’m gonna give up

It’s nearly been a year since he’s been gone
And we still sing his goodbye songs
Goodness knows she should move on
But she just can’t let him go
No, she just can’t let him go

I’m sorry if I made you want to cry
I’m sorry if I made you want to cry
You should know, I never meant to hide
I just hate bringing you down
Oh, I just hate bringing you down

I just can’t seem to get it right today
I just can’t seem to get it right today

And I dropped my paintbrush in the dirt
Still remember just how much that hurt
I cut my hand and wait for it to work
But I just couldn’t bring him back
No, I just couldn’t bring him back

I just can’t seem to get it right today
Oh, I just can’t seem to get it right today
I just can’t seem to get it right today
I guess I’m gonna give up
Oh, I guess I’m gonna give up
Oh I guess I’m gonna give up
Oh I guess I’m gonna give up
Oh I guess I’m gonna give up
Oh I guess I’m gonna give up
Oh Lord I said I guess I’m gonna give up
Oh Lord I said I guess I’m gonna give up

Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turn my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

“Fools,” said I, “you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said “The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence

I have a confession to make; I was looking for an “advanced copy” of Death Cab’s forthcoming album using bittorrent. I know, I’m ashamed but I need my fix. Well to my ecstatic surprise I found what I thought was a leak of Narrow Stairs, but after further investigation (ie reading other people’s comments) I found that some bush league blogger had put another band’s music up and called it Death Cab’s new release. That other band was Velveteen, funny how the internet works sometimes…

Velveteen is a group of four guys from Frankfurt, Germany. And the truth is they do sound more like Death Cab for Cutie than any band I’ve heard before, but I would also say they draw inspiration from their fellow Germans, The Notwist. The good thing is their music is more reminiscent of older albums like Something About Airplanes and a little of The Photo Album.

Why They Don’t Suck: While you won’t find it to be all that original, Velveteen makes for an enjoyable listen because they follow a well developed structure and know how to play together.
